Melbourne act, Muscat’s 2017starts with the release of their second single Selfish. After a busy year playing a string of live shows including a homecoming sell-out performance in Melbourne, Selfish will also be featured on their debut album, due out in 2017. Their debut single, Girlfriend helped launch Muscat, garnering good support at radio as well as a top 5 placement in the Best Pop Song Category at the 2016 Australian Independent Music Awards. Selfish can be interpreted in a few ways,’ Ricky Muscat says about the song’s lyric. ‘On one hand, it’s an intimate and very direct emotional response to a situation that I think we all feel at certain times in our lives, but it’s also about friendship generally, the difficulties and the fragility of maintaining strong relationships.’ This piece of pop funk straddles the line between old-school and contemporary once more, mixing guitars, eighties synths and throwback rap rhythms with an unrestrained vocal at the helm. ‘When we perform this track live it really takes off, and we wanted to capture that same electricity with the recording,’ Ricky says. ‘We wanted it to be the kind of song you hear once and can’t help but start moving to it.’ Selfish is the second release for Melbourne indie label Cultivator Records and is a continuation of their in-house approach to producing Australian music, with a focus on the artists’ creative development a key ingredient of their outlook.
